Balliol College Junior Common Room Bar – Lindsay Bar
The Lindsay Bar at Balliol College is the last remaining student-run bar at Oxford University, located within the basement of the Junior Common Room and serving as a key social hub for students and alumni alike. Lynrace Studio was appointed to design and deliver a full refurbishment, combining interior design, project management, procurement, and installation under a single coordinated brief. The project carefully balanced operational efficiency, robustness, and atmosphere, optimising layout, bar workflow, and lighting while preserving the bar’s much-loved hand-painted murals depicting the history of Balliol. Material upgrades, improved lighting and sound system were introduced to create a warmer, more adaptable space capable of hosting everything from daily student use to DJ nights and alumni events. The result is a refreshed yet characterful bar that enhances the student experience while respecting the identity and heritage of the college.
