THE WHITE RABBIT
Solar Canopy & Beer Garden Enhancement
The White Rabbit is a much-loved independent pub tucked away in the heart of Oxford, known for its pizzas, lively atmosphere and popular outdoor beer garden. Lynrace Studio has developed proposals for a new solar canopy that brings together renewable energy generation, weather protection and an improved outdoor hospitality experience.

Project Overview
The proposals centre on a new glazed photovoltaic canopy spanning approximately 22 metres across the existing beer garden. Designed to replace previously approved parasol structures, the canopy combines solar energy generation with a permanent architectural feature that allows the outdoor space to be enjoyed more comfortably throughout the year.
The structure incorporates photovoltaic glazing, providing shelter whilst allowing natural light into the garden. Retractable transparent weather screens offer additional protection from wind and rain without permanently enclosing the space, retaining the open character and atmosphere that make the beer garden so popular.
Alongside the canopy, the proposals include improvements to the surrounding landscaping and outdoor environment, creating a more comfortable and adaptable setting for customers.
A key consideration has been integrating a contemporary structure into the historic urban setting of central Oxford, balancing the operational needs of a busy independent pub with the architectural character of its surroundings.
Lynrace Studio's role encompasses architectural design, development of the canopy concept, coordination of the proposed interventions, preparation and submission of the planning application and project delivery (construction planned for early 2027)
The project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural improvements can support independent hospitality businesses, making better use of existing outdoor spaces whilst introducing renewable energy generation as an integral part of the design.
